Joni Mitchell – Help Me
Celebrating her 75th birthday today, Joni Mitchel is an icon and music legend. From her start as a Canadian folk style musician, to her legendary status of singer/songwriter/poet, you can’t deny her appeal and influence on music.
One of my favorites, and today’s Forgotten 45 is ‘Help Me” from her 1974 album, ‘Court And Spark”. A love song in interesting music style. Recorded with Tom Scott’s Jazz band, L.A. Express, the song creates an urgency, a hurry up and save me from myself, kind of vibe. While the tempo stays consistent, you brain hears a song that seems to pick up speed as it’s crying out for help from the lover to stop her from falling in love with him. Incredible song crafting here.
The song is Joni’s highest charting single, peaking at #7 on the Hot 100 in June of 1974.
Sidenote: The next single released from this album? “Free Man In Paris. Awesome!
