Hops have loads of health benefits and are supposed to help with joint inflammation, insomnia, respiratory spasms and indigestion. So drink up for your health!

SingleSpeed German Inspiration

Here’s a tasty brew from SingleSpeed Brewing in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. A true Munich Dunkel with lots of malty goodness. With three different malt flavors and a blended and balances hoppiness, this fits the dunkel profile to a “T”.

It pours a dark amber with a light, fluffy head. The nose is definitely malt and a little grassy hop. A very earthy note follows on the tongue with light roasted malt. Nothing too dark or charred. A slightly dry hop finish with a good carbonation makes this a nice and flavorful beer to drink. As a standard, no frills needed dunkel, this is picture perfect. It’s a fairly easy drinker too, at only 5.2% ABV.

Now here’s an IPA that I need to try ASAP! The mix of hops in this truly brings out a unique flavor profile, especially with the fairly new hop called, Nelson Sauvin. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it was named after the Sauvignon Blanc wine grape that has many of the similar flavor profiles!

“Named after Sauvignon Blanc wine grape for its similar characteristics in flavor and aroma, the Nelson Sauvin hops has recently gained popularity in American-style Pale Ales for its complex oil profile. It requires fairly prudent and discerning applications during the brewing process in order to bring out its unique aroma, flavor and bitterness. With fruitiness resembling that of white wine, these hops contribute grape-infused tropical flavors to our beloved FSM!” – Toppling Goliath

Three other hops are blended with the Nelson Sauvin; Citra, Mosaic, and Galaxy. Each of these has it’s own unique flavor that adds even more complexity to this brew. Citrus, pine, mango, peach, with a pleasantly pungent bitter than adds to the many hop profiles. I imagine it finishes like a dry white wine, encouraging more sips or gulps, when we’re taking a cold IPA.

I’m pretty excited to try this as I love well thought-out and complex craft brews. They are like a finished puzzle that I get to “take apart” as I sip, using the olfactory senses to detect each little essence. That’s part of what make craft beers so fun and enjoyable for me.
