Here’s To Beer: A weekly Beer Blog Part 108!

By Tim Martin Jan 15, 2021 | 3:31 PM

FINALLY! A new beer blog entry! The end of last year took a huge toll on me, mentally, emotionally and physically. To be honest, I hadn’t had but one beer since November, until this past week. Wasn’t interested, didn’t have a taste for it, just didn’t want it. When that happens, I don’t blog because I want to be an honest beer blogger. I will ONLY blog about a beer I have actually imbibed. I just don’t want to fake it. Hope that answers any questions you had about why there hasn’t been a recent beer blog in a while.

Living The Dream Brewing Co. – Powder Run

Here’s another from a Beer Drop shipment I’ve told you about… A subscription based box of beer from Colorado breweries. I love it as there are nearly NONE of these to be found distributed in Iowa.

This is one of THE best light bodied beers I’ve ever had! Powder Run is a light, full flavor cream ale with WONDERFUL natural vanilla flavor that makes this beer taste like a malt and wheat, alcoholic version of cream soda, without the syrupy sweetness. Pours a beautiful gold with a nice, white head that smells of yeast, wheat and lots of vanilla. The mouthfeel is light and bubbly and is an easy drinker. I’m so glad Beer Drop sends two of each beer in a drop! I drank both of these in 20 min. and you can because the ABV is a low 5%! You might think about subscribing to Beer Drop so you can experience some of the things I have AND you can add most any beer to an order. That means, ordering a sixer of Powder Run!

Living The Dream Brewing

Millstream 35th Anniversary Bockinator

This is a very limited brew from Chris Priebe and the crew at Millstream in Amana. I was gifted it before Christmas and had planned to crack it Christmas Eve night but didn’t get chance to do that. Then, I figured I’d crack it on New Year’s Eve but ended up popping the top of a homebrew I was given by one of the members of CRAZE homebrewers in the Cedar Valley instead. Having said that and explaining why I haven’t blogged since November, Bockinator is still waiting, patiently, in my fridge for me to enjoy it. However, it’s a bomber and I don’t want to waste it so I’m hoping a friend will be willing to help me this weekend. FINGERS CROSSED!

Millstream Bockinator

Homebrewed Eisbock

Speaking of the homebrew I did open and enjoy from Roy, a homebrewer and member of CRAZE (Cedar River Association of Zymurgy Enthusiasts) had brewed a small batch of a potent Eisbock with an estimated ABV of 11-12% ABV.

This was very smooth and interesting. A dark amber pour with a sweet nose of dark fruits and raisins and alcohol. A mouthcoating, slightly thicker body, reminded me more of a mead and about as sweet. Dark fermented fruit, raisin, baker’s chocolate, and certainly boozy! I noticed myself having “hot flashes” part of the way through this! Had to be boozy, yet it was smooth enough to enjoy without getting the “isopropyl alcohol” nose you can get from some Abbey quads on the market. It’s DEFINITELY a sipper as a little goes a long way. No need to fill even this 10oz glass!

War Tree Imperial Stout

And lastly, Peace Tree Brewing in Knoxville, IA has been reviewed here before as I have really enjoyed many of their brews.

BUT – They have created an alter-ego! Kind of a “Dr. Heckyl and Mr, Hyde” thing called WAR TREE Brewing!

“The first beer from War Tree will launch on January 23, 2021. While some have struggled with the hot fermenting Kveik yeast, we have tamed it into submission. Our inaugural Kveik Imperial Stout is a skullcrusher. Black mountains of chocolate malt and roasted cacao crash down mercilessly into waves of house made oat milk, spilling forth like magma into this Norwegian yeast.  The beast ferments and rises from the dark waters at a savage 11% ABV, stalking the cold winter’s night with an unquenchable, relentless thirst. Perfect by the fire while plotting your next evil empire or perfecting that heavy drum drop.” – War Tree Brewing

I don’t know about you but I’d love to try this sooner than later!
