Celebrating Roger Daltrey from The Who, who’s celebrating his 77th birthday!

The Who – 5:15

“5:15” was released as a single from The Who’s second rock opera, ‘Quadrophenia’. Many hold this album in higher regard that even ‘Tommy’.

“5:15” refers to the train leaving at that time and the song’s protagonist, Jimmy, was travelling to Brighton and having to sit between a couple of people from the city who are judging him. Jimmy takes some drugs to while away the travel time and try to ignore the city folk.

While on the train he spends time recollecting his time as a “mod” (short for Modernist – a culture of mainly young and forward thinking youth interested in modern jazz, fusion and fashion), and the many run-ins with the opposing culture, “rockers” (rock and roll enthusiasts who rode motorcycles and wore leather).

Both Daltrey and Pete Townshend share lead vocals on this, Townshend in the beginning, then Daltrey. They share some back and forth vocals throughout.

“5:15” hit the U.S. Hot 100 and managed to climb to #45 in 1973!
